Take a Chance on 5G – Swedish Regulator PTS launches Spectrum Plan for Tests

Launching Spectrum Plan for 5G tests, the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) has made available 100 to 200 MHz in the 3.4-3.6 GHz band and up to 1 000 MHz in the 26 GHz band for 5G tests. These bands are, together with the 700 MHz band, identified as initial pioneer bands for 5G deployment in Europe. A favourable and enabling environment for 5G development can contribute to strengthen Sweden’s position as a leading IT nation.

During a public consultation in February 2017, PTS received responses to its proposal on Spectrum Plan for the 5G tests and examined the market’s interest in licenses to conduct 5G tests in the 3.4-3.6 GHz and 26 GHz band from 2017. Nine parties responded to PTS public consulation. The stakeholders expressed support for the major part of PTS’s proposal on the spectrum plan for 5G tests and PTS finds that the PTS’s proposal is accepted.

From 2020 PTS intends to assign those frequencies for long-term use which would allow for large-scale commercial 5G network deployments.
Favorable conditions for 5G development can strengthen Sweden’s position as a leading IT nation. Sweden has the potential to be one of the first countries in Europe where extensive 5G network is being deployed. PTS now creates opportunities for stakeholders to make large-scale tests of 5G technology already from 2017.
